COMMON SYMPTOMS IN ADVANCED CKD PATIENTS ON HEMODIALYSIS AND NON- PHARMACOLOGICAL INTERVENTION APPROACHES: A NARRATIVE REVIEW
Abstract
Purpose of view: The purpose of this narrative review is to provide a summary of current evidence on non-pharmacological interventions for managing common symptoms in advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis. The review highlights symptoms such as pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, itching, nausea and vomiting, cognitive impairment, and anxiety and depression, emphasizing the need for holistic management to improve patients' quality of life.
Source of information: This was a narrative review, here we have gathered information in a very systematic way. The electronic data base such as ProQuest, Embase, PubMed, PsycARTICLES, EBSCO, ResearchGate, EORTC, Scopus, Educational Resources Information Centre (ERIC), and Allied Health Literature (CINHAL) were searched and article published in between from 2010 to 2024 were identified.
Methods: This was a narrative review, and focuses on non-pharmacological interventions, such as exercise, cognitive-behavioral therapy, acupuncture, massage, dietary interventions, and relaxation techniques. Studies were included based on their relevance to symptom management in advanced CKD patients on long-term dialysis. The review does not include a formal quality assessment of the studies but presents a broad overview of available evidence.
