Abstract

Tourism has become one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries, but its rapid growth has led to significant environmental, cultural, and economic challenges. Sustainable tourism presents a solution that seeks to minimize negative impacts while maximizing the benefits for host communities and preserving natural and cultural heritage for future generations. This article defines sustainable tourism and examines its significance in addressing the environmental degradation, cultural erosion, and economic inequality often associated with conventional tourism. It further explores the core principles of sustainable tourism, emphasizing environmental conservation, community engagement, and long-term economic benefits. Despite its potential, sustainable tourism faces several challenges, including over-tourism, lack of awareness, and the tension between economic growth and conservation. The article provides suggestions to overcome these challenges, including promoting eco-friendly practices, involving local communities in decision-making, managing visitor numbers, and fostering awareness among tourists and industry operators. By adopting these strategies, sustainable tourism can contribute to a more equitable, responsible, and resilient tourism industry that benefits both travelers and host destinations.
